Recently returned from Uniworld's Highlights of China. The itinerary was exceptional and as the trip title implies, we really saw the highlights, from the Great Wall to the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xian including a wonderful experience on the Yangtzi River.
Since this was our first land/river trip, we didn't have anything to compare this trip to since all of our previous international trips were with major cruise lines. However, suffice to say that we were impressed with what Uniworld provided. They seemed to make a sincere effort to provide us with the best. No ...
trip is complete without a guide who is well groomed in many areas. Our guide, Michael Menghe was exceptional! Not only did he possess the credentials to provide our 26 member group with accurate information on all the sights visited, he also was very sensitive to the individual needs of all the guests including a gentleman who required a wheelchair and very often you would see Michael accommodating the man with his limitations. WHAT A GREAT GUIDE!
I would be remiss if I didn't call attention to the little things that I was disappointed in, keeping in mind that one is 6000 miles from home in an entirely different culture and you are at the mercy of someone else making decisions for you. Our Ship, the Victoria Jenna is owned by Victoria Cruises Lines, not Uniworld, and even though it is new and beautiful, the food was rationed to us and at best mediocre. This is something that Uniworld has NO control over since there were other goups on the Jenna including a group from Princess Cruises.
One doesn't realize how important weather is when it comes to selecting dates to travel to other countries We selected April to travel to China and even though it rained, was cold, and had a brief moment of snow to damper the moment, the spectacular presence of the Wall made it all worth while. So don't attempt to save a few dollars be selecting a date that will be a challenge with weather.
I was also not impressed with some of the restaurant selections. While some restaurants' efforts were consistent with one would expect. Some of the food in other venues appeared lacking in freshness. In fact when we returned to the USA, we dined at a favorite restaurant of ours and I acknowleded to the restaurant owner that her food preparations were more satisfying than what we experienced in China. To give some credibility to my critic, the owner I am referring to is from Shanghai, China.
To Sum up everything, Uniworld was a great choice. I hope that they will be able to influence some of the vendors that they deal with to make the experience complete
