SERVICEservice was attentive, and response was prompt.
PRODUCTship was nice, service was very good. food was mixed.. breakfast and lunches usually OK, dinner varied. meat often dry. dining room is drab, could be updated. tours started too early... e.g. usually 7 or 7:30. so had to get up early every day. not relaxing. Don't understand why tours had to start so early. why couldn't they start at 8 instead. i had to get up usually at 5:15 to get ready and have time for breakfast. made trip strenuous. tours were good, tour guide Mohamed was very good. Didn't appreciate being charged $2 for a soda at lunch or dinner, given cost of trip. don't like being "nickled and dimed". Other Uniworld cruises include wine, as do Viking which i've been on several times. Wine should have been included, again, given cost of trip. Also, no meals were included in Cairo, whereas other tours usually include some dinners. So don't consider trip a "good value". seems like egypt operates under different conditions.

SERVICEService is excellent. Staff cannot do enough for you.
PRODUCTVery early departures for tours (7AM) and one day @ 5:30AM. Soda's should be provided as they were very inexpensive in town. Very inconvenient. All Tours were great and we had a great egyptologist. Wish there was elevators on ship as taking stairs got old after a long day of walking. Breakfast was good on ship, lunches ok, and dinners ok. Would love to see lunch meat for lunch (only provided at breakfast). Steak improved at dinner after talking to management. Bedroom nice size. Bathroom large with tub and separate shower. Unfortunately the shower was extremely small. Wish there was a place to mount the hand held shower head in tub to use. Water provided in rooms. All staff could not be nicer or more helpful. Room service provided but no menu so you just asked for what you might want and hope you could get it. They cooked to order so it might take a long time to get it (hour). Recommend for people with no disabilities.

SERVICEVery attentive and friendly. Always tried to be helpful. Boat was very clean.
PRODUCTBoat always on schedule. A lot of the passengers(about 2/3) got sick with bronchitis. Need some sort of supply of medical items on board(aspirin, cough drops, cough medicine, etc) The crew would go out and get medicine when in a port but it made it harder on everybody. The Nile view was wonderful but the air quality was pretty bad which didn't help with the coughs. Should be better advice given about the burning of sugar cane, etc. in the fields so we could have brought breathing masks, Our guide had to get them for us.

SERVICEThey did everything well. Service was flawless. No problems whatsoever. Yes, I would recommend Uniworld.
PRODUCTThe cruise was exceptionally well-run, the ship was beautiful, and service and food were first rate, but I found the climate in Saigon and the Mekong Delta unbearable. I would rather have had less of that and more of Angkor Wat and Hanoi, which had a much more pleasant climate. I would suggest shortening the delta portion and including Halong Bay as part of the tour instead.

This may be a function of the airline schedule, but I thought arrival in Hanoi on February 7 was too late. We were not settled in our hotel room until 10:00 pm, leaving no time to enjoy the hotel's facilities or even have dinner. There was no opportunity for dinner at all this day except for what was served on the flight to Hanoi. Meanwhile, we spent most of the day sitting around in Siem Reap waiting to leave. Departure should have been earlier.

I did not like having to carry a large amount of cash around for virtually the entire trip to use for tips at the end. This was inconvenient, there should be a way to add tips to your bill and charge them.

The local guide in Bangkok (Jenny) was wonderful but I'm not sure this add-on was worth it considering the small portion of Bangkok that we actually saw.

All of the hotels were wonderful, simply beautiful, but I would have liked more time to enjoy the Intercontinental Westlake in Hanoi.

SERVICEThe staff tried really hard to please us on the trip. They all made an effort to learn our names and likes and dislikes. The dining room staff in particular were all outstanding, very friendly and service oriented to the point where they could bring us our favorite drinks without our asking for it, they would find us places to sit in the dining room, and recommend and explain what the various dishes were.

Astrid, the Resident Manager of the ship, was extremely accommodating, always helpful, and ready to deal with any needs we had.
PRODUCTAs someone who was in college at the time of the Vietnam War, this cruise was not my first choice, but it was my wife's turn to pick a trip and here I was.

I have to say it was an enriching and illuminating experience. As the Vietnamese would say, it is all in the past- I guess they are a very forward looking people. All of the people I met during the trip were friendly and warm. Most were not even alive during the war, so it is a different generation.

The sights we saw were quite different than what you would see in Europe. Saigon was crowded and the streets were crazy with traffic. I have never seen so many motorcycles in one place. Very few traffic lights and no one stopped anyway. You had to be very aware when crossing streets. The hotel we stayed in, the Park Hyatt, was very nice, and centrally located.

We were a little concerned when we boarded the boat, as our room was not as clean as we would have liked, certainly not like the European Uniworld boats. We mentioned this to Astrid, the Resident Manager, and before we knew it, the room had been thoroughly recleaned and the situation was resolved. When we mentioned we thought the bed was a little firm for us, Astrid arranged for additional mattress pads to be put on it. I have to say that Astrid was always there for us during the cruise to help us out when we needed it. We miss her already.

The food on board was very good- both western and local dishes were offered, and the dining room staff were very anxious to please. They all made the effort to greet us by name when we entered the dining room, learned our likes and dislikes and were really quite good. They certainly made a great effort to meet our needs.

We visited a number of Vietnamese and Cambodian villages while cruising on the Mekong and they were very interesting. The market at Sa Dec was pretty big and the different foods were interesting to look at. We also got to see fish farms, rice noodle factories (basically run in someone's house), a basket weaving place (also in someone's house) , a boat maker (also in someone's house), a candy factory, various Temples and churches, and a Cambodian school. They also took us to some more upscale artisan places during the trip- buying opportunities.

When we cruised into Phnom Penh, it was like sailing into Las Vegas- casinos and places all lit up- like a modern city in the middle of nowhere. I thought the city was more modern than Saigon and the Palace and government buildings were impressive. However, Cambodia has a horrible modern history and the trip to one of the “killing fields” and a detention center was pretty grim. But it was a part of their history.

One part of the cruise should be noted- most of the time, the boat anchored in the middle of the Mekong and we would need to transfer to a Sampan, or smaller boat, to reach the shore. And even upon reaching the shore, there would not always be a regular dock to get off the boat at. But the crew was very aware of this and took extra care to ensure that all of the passengers were able to make the transfers safely.

For me, Siem Reap was the highlight of the trip- it is a very resort type of city which really caters to tourists, The hotel we stayed at, a Sofitel Resort was very nice- nice pool and grounds- and was one of many upscale hotels in the city. It was easy to get around- tuk-tuk rides ran about $2 and everyone took American dollars. And, of course, Angkor Wat was amazing. We even got up at 4:30 AM one day to see the sunrise over the temples.

Finally, Hanoi seemed more modern and cleaner than Saigon, but was also very crowded. Again, we stayed at a very modern upscale hotel, the Intercontinental Westlake Hanoi. Lots of new and modern construction going on, and the Old Town area was pretty interesting as was the Water Puppet show. We also got to see Ho Chi Mihn’s mausoleum and residence, so it seemed there was more to see there than in Saigon.

During the trip, they took us for 5-6 meals in restaurants in the various places we went to. All the restaurants were pretty upscale and the food was pretty good- multiple courses of local fare, but not too exotic. They were also very solicitous of dietary needs. I also have to say our cruise manager, Quang, was very organized and made us feel secure in a very foreign place and well taken care of.

We had 3 local guides on the trip, one in Saigon, who stayed with us until we reached Cambodia, a Cambodian guide who stayed with us until we flew to Hanoi, and a different Vietnamese guide for the Hanoi portion of the trip. They were all very informative, and had good English skills. I was especially impressed with the breath of knowledge of AK, our Saigon guide, and the knowledge and passion of Peter our Cambodian guide. I also liked the fact that Quang split the 60 passengers on the trip into 3 groups of about 20 people each. Each group had their own guide assigned to them and took the excursions on separate sampans, or buses as the case may be. As a result there was always plenty of room to spread out on the tours and excursions and the tour groups were small enough to get into smaller areas.

To sum up this is a very different experience than what you would have on a European river cruise. It is not as developed a part of the world, and except for the hotels and buses, will feel very different. But you will see a part of the world that you would not otherwise experience, and seeing Angkor Wat and the other temples there is an amazing experience. For anyone with a sense of adventure, this is a very worthwhile trip.
