Annunciation Cathedral located at the Kremlin in Moscow
Kremlin and Armory Museum

Moscow’s legendary Kremlin—a self-contained city with palaces, armories, and cathedrals built within a medieval fortress—is truly beyond extraordinary. A huge triangle enclosed by red brick walls, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the oldest area of the city and one of the world’s most beautiful architectural treasures.

Enter the fortress through the Borovitsky Gate to begin your tour of the Armory Museum. Its priceless collection of czarist treasures includes imperial crowns, jewels, regalia, and gem-encrusted armor, as well as more than 50 exquisite Fabergé eggs. At the centre of the Kremlin is Cathedral Square, with churches dating from the 15th to the 17th centuries: Assumption Cathedral, the site of royal coronations and weddings; Archangel Cathedral, containing the burial vault of Ivan the Terrible and other powerful czars; and Annunciation Cathedral.

Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl’s UNESCO World Heritage-designated city centre features wide, tree-lined streets and attractive parks—courtesy of savvy urban planning ordered by Catherine the Great. Visitors can venture inside the city’s spectacular Church of Elijah the Prophet, a masterpiece of Orthodox architecture, to admire its fresco-covered interior. Along with grand religious imagery, many scenes of daily life can be observed—peasants harvesting hay, weddings, farm animals—all of which provide great insight into how ordinary Russians lived in the 17th century. At the outdoor market, join the locals as they shop for fruits and vegetables, stopping to taste some of the excellent local cheeses or purchase a bottle of Russian vodka.

Kizhi Island

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kizhi Island is home to a world-famous open-air museum, encompassing 89 unique examples of traditional wooden architecture—including cottages, barns, windmills and churches—collected from various locales throughout Russia. These wonderfully preserved buildings provide a fascinating glimpse into the region’s architectural heritage. One of best-known structures here is the remarkable Church of Transfiguration, the epitome of Russian fairytale architecture, with a multitude of impossibly intricate onion domes made entirely of wood. Built in 1714 with 22 shingled domes, this ingeniously constructed church was assembled without a single nail. Visitors also have an opportunity see what life was like for 19th-century inhabitants in a re-created peasant house furnished with items typical of the time.

Historic Centre of St. Petersburg

In the UNESCO-designated historic centre of St. Petersburg, Uniworld guests have a chance to see the city’s magnificent palaces, cathedrals, and monuments in two ways—by land as well as by water. Our panoramic city tour travels down Nevsky Prospect, from the vast neoclassical palace toward the spire of the Admiralty building, and highlights key sites such as St. Isaak’s Cathedral, the ornate Smolny Cathedral, the Field of Mars, the state university, and the ornamented onion domes of the Church of Our Savior-on-Blood. Three rivers and innumerable canals and bridges crisscross the city, providing another superb opportunity to view beautiful St. Petersburg, this time from the up-close perspective of a scenic canal cruise.
