The French Experience, à la Uniworld

“River cruising in France is a tremendous way to discover areas of the country you probably have never seen before.”

- Matt Long, Landlopers travel blog, 2015

Imagine awakening from a restful slumber in a handcrafted bed…outside your window, you glimpse a riverside scene that has endured for centuries. Where are you? Onboard a luxurious Uniworld ship as it arrives in another picturesque French port. Ahead, a day full of exciting discoveries.

Greet the day with Sun Salutations with the ship’s Wellness Coach, then tuck into a lavish Champagne breakfast and head ashore, where you’ll often have a choice of excursions. On our “Burgundy & Provence” cruise, you might take a gourmet tour of the Les Halles de Lyon market. Hike or bike ride through verdant Médoc vineyards in the west of France on “Bordeaux, Vineyards & Chateaux.” Or “do as the locals do” on a walking tour of the City of Light on our “Paris & Normandy” itinerary, stopping to sample whatever strikes your fancy—crêpes, chocolates, or delicate macarons, almost too pretty to eat.

After lunch onboard, there’s more to see and do—depending on your itinerary, you might have lunch with paired wines at a private château in the Bordeaux region, visit a street market in the south of France, or taste Calvados in Normandy. Select departures of Uniworld’s Connoisseur Collection offer additional options for food and wine lovers, such as a cooking demo and tea party at the Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon, or a chance to accompany a truffle-hunting hound on a search for “black diamonds” in Provence.

Dinner onboard is a multi-course feast, with a choice of entrees paired with regional wines selected by Uniworld’s own sommeliers. Your ship’s culinary team finds inspiration in local dishes and delicacies—they may serve duck confit and caviar d’Aquitaine in Bordeaux, a rustic tarte tatin topped with cream in Normandy, and succulent seafood and sun-ripened olives in Burgundy and Provence. The pastry chef’s decadent desserts are miniature works of art, and there’s always a selection of fresh local cheeses, everything from full-flavored pressed cheeses to soft creamy cheeses to pungent blues.

The candlelight and conversation may entice you to linger over your meal well into the night. Take a whirl on the dance floor, enjoy entertainment in the lounge, or step outside to admire the moon as the ship slips through darkened waters. Your comfy bed beckons you back to your stateroom. Sweet dreams…tomorrow, another day of adventure awaits!

"I just wish there was an even higher rating. Uniworld deserves it."
