Dinner with Four Strangers

Dinner with Four Strangers

When you hear the term Progressive Dinner, do you know what to expect? Typically, it is a dinner party with multiple courses prepared and served at the residences of different hosts.

But have you ever heard of a Progressive Dinner served on a river ship? My husband and I were immediately intrigued, and we had to experience it for ourselves. We’re so glad we did.

We anticipated we would be dining in different places on the ship that were open to all guests. Incorrect. This culinary inspiration combined with an amazing adventure was a magical, intimate experience we’ll never forget.

First stop was the Kitchen for champagne and the soup du jour. To be able to see how the kitchen operates and to meet with the staff was priceless. It gives you the opportunity to thank them for their culinary excellence and to inquire about a specific dish you were especially fond of.

Second stop was the Laundry Room with more champagne. On the S.S. Bon Voyage, the Laundry Room was across the hall from our next stop. While our next course was being set, we drank champagne and chatted with the Head of Housekeeping. She explained what items are laundered on the ship and what items aren’t. Truly fascinating and gives you an appreciation of what the staff accomplishes in a small space.

Third stop was the Staff Dining Room for the appetizer featuring chicken, seafood, and vegetable “cigars” served with a sweet chili dip. While we ate, the staff explained when and how the room is used. Often, they bring food from the kitchen and eat it here.

Fourth stop was the Bridge and a special cocktail for a rare opportunity to chat with the Captain to ask questions about what his job entails. He even gave us a short tutorial about the instrument panel because one of our dinner companions owned his own sailboat.

Fifth stop was La Brasserie, a public space at the back of the ship, to enjoy a plate of fried shrimp brightened with a homemade lemon mayonnaise. This gave us a chance to chat amongst ourselves to learn more about our dining companions and what they liked most so far on our Bordeaux cruise.

Sixth and final stop was La Cave des Vins, an intimate wine cave space, to enjoy the main course and dessert. The sommelier gave his presentation explaining why specific wines were chosen to pair with that evening’s dinner (steak in a peppercorn sauce, served with potatoes gratin and vegetables). To sit amongst the many bottles of wine devouring the tender steak and chatting with our new friends was immensely enjoyable.

Knowing that dessert was soon to follow was almost too much, but why would you decline a signature dessert from the Pastry Chef? None of us did, and we were treated to a delectable dessert of deep-fried banana with coconut, topped with a rich chocolate sauce.

If you are one that relishes exclusivity and behind the scenes access, then the Progressive Dinner should be placed at the top of your must-do list. You won’t regret it.
