I recently returned from a Uniworld cruise through Bordeaux with my sister, and I can confidently say: this destination truly has it all. From magnificent vineyards and historic architecture to world-class cuisine and enriching excursions, Bordeaux offered the perfect balance of relaxation and discovery. Whether you're a seasoned wine lover or a curious newcomer like myself, this region welcomes you with open arms—and a full glass.

We planned this trip as a birthday celebration for my sister, and it couldn’t have been more special. The experience felt elevated in every way, luxurious and approachable at the same time.

So why is Bordeaux worth visiting?

The Food: A Feast for the Senses
Besides the wine, Bordeaux is a dream destination for food lovers like myself. The freshness and quality of ingredients throughout the region shine through in every dish. Dining onboard the S.S. Bon Voyage was a true highlight, with a variety of exceptional offerings that showcased both French classics and creative regional specialties.

Some standout moments:

• Fresh oysters enjoyed every chance I had—because when in Bordeaux!
• Buttery, flaky pastries that set the bar for breakfast.
• A memorable off-ship meal featuring duck pithivier—a dish I’m still thinking about.

From charming bistros to bustling farmers markets, every meal felt like a celebration of French culinary culture—and the perfect way to toast to my sister’s birthday.

Architecture and Atmosphere
Beyond the vines, Bordeaux is seriously charming. It’s a walkable city with this perfect blend of old-world grace and modern flair. Case in point: the Cité du Vin, aka the coolest wine museum you’ll ever visit. Even if you're wine-clueless like me, it’s a must.

We especially loved:

• The grand city center and its picturesque alleyways.
• The relaxed, walkable layout filled with cozy cafés and local farmers markets.
• There’s a timeless charm in Bordeaux that makes you feel instantly at home.

Thoughtful Experiences
One of the aspects that made this Uniworld journey so special was the thoughtful curation of excursions—each offering a deeper connection to the region.

Some of our favorites included:

• Saint-Emilion: We truly fell in love with this place. The walking tour through the medieval villages felt like stepping into a storybook. The wine tasting inside a wine cave was an experience we won’t forget—intimate, authentic, and rich with flavor and tradition.
• Rémy Martin Experience: A private tour through their historic house and cellars, with a fascinating history spanning 300 years. We were especially inspired to learn the House is currently female-led.
• La Petite Cave in Blaye: A private wine tasting hosted by the owners in their beautiful home, featuring local wines and a personal art collection. We left with both wine and lasting memories.
• Bassins des Lumières: A digital art experience housed in a former submarine base, which beautifully complemented our onboard lecture about Bordeaux’s role during WWII.

The Wine: Bold, Balanced, and Unforgettable
You simply can’t visit Bordeaux without experiencing its world-renowned wines. My sister, a true wine enthusiast, carefully researched the region ahead of our trip. While I came in with limited knowledge, I left with a newfound appreciation for French wines—especially the reds.
What I discovered:

• Bordeaux wines are incredibly balanced, complex, and approachable.
• The vineyards are not only beautiful but welcoming and educational.
• Even for a beginner, the tastings were engaging and accessible.

Final Thoughts
