Celebrating 50 Years of Uniworld

Uniworld turns 50 this year—our Golden Anniversary!—and we’re taking a moment to reflect on how we got here. To celebrate this exciting milestone, 2026 will be full of special experiences onboard and off. The 1970s
Uniworld was founded in 1976. When we first started, we were bringing travelers to parts of Europe that people didn’t know they were missing out on—places that were still “best kept secrets.”

The 1980s
Our explorations of Europe led us to discover the European river cruising industry! At the time, it was largely designed for Europeans looking to explore their own continent rather than for long-haul travelers. It was immediately clear to us how amazing river cruising is for visiting multiple places, from big cities to hidden gems, in comfort. We knew if we made a few tweaks, people would fall in love. We brought in hotel-style luxury, fine dining, personalized service, unique experiences at every stop, and all-inclusive pricing. And that’s really what gave way to modern river cruising as we know it.

The 1990s
We launched our first new-build ships in the 1990s. While these ships have been retired or refurbished since then, we remember this early collection fondly. When they first set sail, the River Queen, River Empress, River Princess, and River Duchess were the finest ships on the rivers, each with their own beautiful design schemes.

This decade also saw our maps expand to include Portugal, the Venetian Lagoon, Egypt, and Asia!

The 2000s
As more and more people discovered the wonders of river cruising, we refined and perfected the format. Never mass market, never cookie cutter. We believe our travelers deserve the best, and that means delivering something special, every time. We continued to refine the best culinary and service teams on the rivers, set our destination experts scouting for rare experiences, and doubled down on our boutique design philosophy. To this day, our ships represent the only true “Floating Boutique Hotels” on the rivers, with a unique and distinctive design for every ship we build.

The 2010s
The first members of our Super Ship™ fleet took to the waters, showcasing the most luxurious designs to be found aboard any river ship in the world. Guests fell in love with the craftsmanship behind these vessels—from the regal decor of the S.S. Maria Theresa, whose interiors reflect the signature aesthetic of the former Hapsburg lands she sails through, to the chic ambience of ships like the S.S. Joie de Vivre, designed to capture Parisian cafe charm.

The 2020s
Our innovative spirit continues strong. In the first half of this decade, we’ve introduced the river cruising industry’s first Cruise & Rail journeys, Mystery Cruises, and Rivers of the World cruises.

Along with our sister brands at The Travel Corporation, we also launched our How We Tread Right strategy. As of 2026, we’re still the only river cruise line with a formalized sustainability strategy that consists of actionable, measured goals.

We’ve had a spectacular time seeing the world in unmatched style with you all these last 50 years, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next 50.
