Czech Republic Surprising & Inspiring

The larger-than-life personality of the Czech Republic—and Prague in particular—has attracted artists, writers, scientists, and composers for centuries. And around every corner is a wonderful reminder of its storied past. Among the medieval castles, cathedrals, and UNESCO sites, you’ll find a lively cultural scene with inspiring art and architecture, exhibitions spaces, cinemas, and concert venues.

HIGHLIGHTS

Architecture
Czech Republic

Known as the “city of a hundred spires,” Prague stands frozen in time. At its heart is the pristine Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 10th century. Some of the city’s most famous golden-crowned spires can be found here including the Our Lady Before Tyn, Prague’s most famous Gothic church, and the magnificent Prague Castle, an awe-inspiring structure of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. Add in the Rococo Kinský Palace and Renaissance houses and you have a treasure trove of architectural delights that will leave you spellbound.

Cuisine
Czech Republic

Being a landlocked country, the Czech Republic is a traditional meat-and-potatoes culture. So, bring your appetite and indulge in hearty dishes like “svíčková na smetaně,” beef tenderloin served in a cream sauce and typically served with dumplings. Locals enjoy treats from food carts like “klobásy,” a type of sausage that’s served up on white buns or slices of rye bread with toppings like ketchup, hot sauce, sauerkraut, and mustard. Another local favorite is “trdelník,” a sweet treat that’s filled with ice cream and other toppings and tossed in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.

Beer
Czech Republic

Prague has a long and loving history with beer. The Brevnov Monastery began brewing beer in 993 and the U Fleků tavern has been serving beer for 520 years. And in 1842, pilsner-style lager was invented in nearby Plzeň. Made with a unique variety of hops known as Saazer that gives beer a rich and flavorful taste, it could be why the Czech Republic has earned the title of most beer consumption per capita in the world; in 2021, Czechs drank an average of 184 liters (48 gallons) per person!

Culture
Czech Republic

Following the Czech National Revival of the 18th and 19th centuries, artistic sentiment in the country bloomed. Everything from Art Nouveau illustrations to political comics to Cubist paintings proliferated in the decades and centuries that followed. Writers were not left behind either—even a brief visit to Prague will bear evidence of the nation’s great pride for Franz Kafka.

TRAVEL TIPS

When to go: We sail all of our Czech Republic cruises between the months of May through October for the best weather. Each of our itineraries operate during this time frame to give you the best experience possible of this incredible destination.

How to pack: We suggest comfortable, sporty, smart-casual daywear both onshore and onboard. Depending on your travel season, the weather can range from cool to quite hot. Check the weather before you go and pack accordingly. Layering clothing items is always your best bet, allowing you to adjust to most temperatures. Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket (preferably hooded) in case of rain, though we will also have umbrellas onboard. You may participate in a significant amount of walking over uneven terrain during your time ashore, so please bring comfortable walking shoes with good ankle support. Sturdy sandals are another good option.
