“Travelling during the day was a highlight as you can sit on deck and watch the world go by.”
– Richard Bathurst (Portraits of Eastern Europe)
Romania is a world of wonder. A magical land of imposing mountains, architectural treasures, vibrant cities, and tiny hamlets where townspeople still travel by horse cart. From the capital city of Bucharest, once known as the “Paris of the East,” to the jaw-dropping landscapes of the Danube River, Romania never fails to impress.
Bucharest has been compared to Paris for its French-style Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture. Many of Bucharest’s buildings were replaced in the mid-20th century by Modernist and Neoclassical buildings such as the Palace of Parliament, a behemoth made with over a million tons of marble, steel, crystal, and wood.
Traditional Romanian food is centered around hearty, savory dishes like sarmale, the country’s national dish of cabbage rolls filled with minced meat (usually pork or in combination with poultry), spices, rice, and onions. Bucharest may be best known for its garlic lamb. You can eat like a local when you order a covrigi, a traditional Romanian pretzel, from a street cart. Those with a sweet tooth might like amandine, a cake filled with cocoa buttercream and topped with cocoa fondant icing.
Romania has a strong tradition of folk art that has thrived throughout the centuries. Vibrant colors, geometric patterns, and nature imagery are distinguishing features of the classic Romanian style, and you’ll find them used across many different mediums from woven fabrics to pottery.
Untouched by time, the land of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a picturesque patchwork of idyllic forests and farms set in the shadow of the Carpathian Mountains. On the Danube, the towering cliffs of the Iron Gates form part of the border between Romania and Serbia. On the Romanian side, you can see the huge face carved into the rock to honor the warrior Decebalus.
When to go: We sail all of our Romania cruises between the months of March and September for the best weather. Our itineraries operate during this time frame to give you the best experience possible of this incredible destination.
How to pack: We suggest comfortable, sporty, smart-casual daywear both onshore and onboard. Depending on your travel season, the weather can range from cool to quite hot. Check the weather before you go and pack accordingly. Layering clothing items is always your best bet, allowing you to adjust to most temperatures. Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket (preferably hooded) in case of rain, though we will also have umbrellas onboard. You may participate in a significant amount of walking over uneven terrain during your time ashore, so please bring comfortable walking shoes with good ankle support. Sturdy sandals are another good option.

“We appreciated visiting each of the seven countries visited, especially those beyond Germany and Austria where we had never visited before. The people and histories we were exposed to were fascinating and inspirational.”

“This was an excellent, long cruise of the Danube and other rivers from Romania to the Netherlands. It was our third Uniworld cruise and we highly recommend it.”
